McCrea, together with Sullivan and James Whitmore, are Confederate soldiers on the lam from their Yankee captors. They join up with a rebel gang of raiders who are preparing to ambush a wagon train full of priceless bullion. They return to the side of the law, however, and prevent the theft. In the meantime, McCrea wins over attractive widow Dahl. Novarro, the great Latin lover of the silent days and star of the 1927 BEN-HUR, here made one of his rare talkie appearances. He successfully made the silent-to-sound transition but worked in movies only when he had the urge to do so. (He thrived in the real estate business until he was tragically murdered in 1968 by thieves who broke into his Hollywood Hills home.) THE OUTRIDERS scenarist Ravetch would go on to write screenplays for HUD (1963) and HOMBRE (1967), both starring Paul Newman and directed by Martin Ritt.
